During the fall and winter of 2006, I had the opportunity to lead the Internet2 community through an extended process of governance reform. A 15-member committee (the "GNC") was charged with preparing recommendations for reform, and I served as acting chair of the GNC when the chair was unable to serve.
Over the course of five months of investigation and deliberation, the GNC
-- prepared an exposure document for the organization's full membership,
-- conducted an extended process of public discussion and comment (here are text and Powerpoint slides from my presentation to the Fall Members Meeting, December 5, 2006), and
-- submitted a final document which was ratified by the board.
After the completion of the reform process, I was asked to serve as chair of the board.
During 2007 we negotiated with the leadership of National LambdaRail an agreement to merge the two organizations that, despite being ultimately rejected by the NLR Board, was illuminating for Internet2.
In 2008 we have initiated a process of strategic planning that is due to be completed during the summer.
